Blogging is a concept that has spread like wildfire all around the world. Considering the fact that blogging has a far outreach, it is no wonder that many businesses, either big or small, today have an online presence. If you have just started your business and want to showcase it to the people, the best form of marketing is coming up with a blog.
Designing a small business blog and launching it is not a really tough job if you have people or information that can guide you on the right track. When I started out on my journey in the field of business and wanted to launch my small business blog, I experienced a lot of road blocks because I did not have any information on how to go about it. I depended on hearsay information and experimented a lot. However, along the way I have learnt a lot of critical information that is a must-know if you want your small business blog to serve you well. I am sure a there are a lot of people who are looking for this information. If you are also one among them, then, you will surely be able to take away a lot of information from this post which will help you set up a successful blog. You can also check my other post where I have listed Important Blogging Lessons For All Our Young Bloggers.
Well, here is my first piece advice for you. If you are serious about the small business blog and want it to help you make profits, then, don’t create it using a freehost like blogger.com. While such hosts might seem to be good for first time blogger, blogging for pleasure, it is definitely not recommended for professional or business blogs. One of the biggest drawbacks is that you cannot control the domain name. It will be shown as nameofyourbusiness.blogspot.com. Instead, own a blog address which is under your control.
Okay, you might wonder what difference it makes whether you control the blog address. What will you do if the server of such a blog goes down? If you are thinking about calling their support team, then, be prepared to wait for ages since support might not be very efficient since it is a free service. Secondly, and probably the most important of them all, is the fact that you cannot design the look of the blog the way you want it. You will be limited to using their pre-designed templates and working around it.
Instead, if the blog address is a part of your domain name, then you will be at liberty to change the software services without having to change the address of the blog.
How can we forget the all important search engine optimization? In this highly competitive world, ranking high on the result list makes a big difference. Having your own domain name with help you achieve this ranking. Link building will be very easy if you have your own domain name. You can read my other blog How A Good Domain and Reliable Web Hosting Makes Your Blog Complete. Great! Now, that you know having your own domain name is imperative, let us see what else you will need to keep in mind.
Once you have registered your URL, the next step is to create a good content plan. If you want an organized look to your blog and have Google index them easily, then, this plan is of utmost importance. You should have clarity on the categories that you would like in the blog. Ensure you pick out the right keywords using tools like Google and WordTracker which are available free of charge. You may also consider using KeywordDiscovery.com and WordStream.com if you can afford paid tools for keyword research.
Small business blogs need more marketing and advertising. The best part is that you can accomplish this without burning a hole in your pocket, thanks to the social bookmarking media. Setting up social profiles and RSS feeds are a must when you launch your small business blog.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading.
Good points…I would note that as someone who really doesn’t comment to blogs much (in fact, this may be my first post), I don’t think the term “lurker” is very becoming to a non-posting reader. It’s not your fault at all, but perhaps the blogosphere could come up with a better, non-creepy name for the 90% of us that enjoy just reading the posts.
