I hope you did read my last post on 10 Most Useful Tips for New Bloggers – Part 1. Here is a continuation post for the next 5 useful tips on blogging.

6. Start To Trackback: A trackback is when you post something on your blog that refers to or links to another blog. The advantage of advertising someone else’s blog on your own is that a link or a ‘trackback’ can be created on the other blog that you have referenced. These trackbacks often appear in the form of comments, giving a summary of your own article on the other blogger’s entry. Just like a relevant comment, a trackback encourages readers of the other blog to come and check out what you have got to say. And who knows, the bloggers whose posts you have referred to might just include a trackback to your blog in their own, leading their audience to your blog.

7. Title Effectively: An effective title is not just one that will be catchy and interesting enough to bring readers in and hold their attention. With a blog title, you are also targeting another audience—that of search engines—and to appeal to them, your title must also be keyword friendly. Writing only for a human audience or for the search engines will both not yield the kind of results that you want. In order to get it right, first phrase your titles and then run some searches on sites like KeywordDiscovery, WordTracker or Overture etcetera to see what the most searched terms are and if you can modify your title to include them.

8. Generate Pillars: In the world of blogging, pillar articles are long posts, generally more than 500 words, that provide a lot of useful, detailed information.  The aim of pillar articles is to educate and enlighten, and well written pillars should be helpful to the readers. Since these articles are supposed to be in the “how-to” or the question-answer format, they are not time dependent and will stay current throughout the life of your blog. Writing at least one pillar article per week will provide you with a good solid foundation for your blog within an year or so.  As a new blogger, it is necessary to have pillars in place because this is what will keep bringing new audience in and holding back your old one.

9. Participate In Carnivals: A blog carnival is a collection of many related blogs on a single topic. These carnivals are hosted by blogs who want to collect the most popular content on a given topic posted in a week all over the blogosphere. By submitting your posts to blog carnivals, you might get your traffic to increase as these carnivals specifically target an audience that is interested in one single theme or topic. To find a list of the carnivals that you can submit to, check out Carnival Submit Form at www.conservativecat.com.

10. Tag and Ping: Almost all successful bloggers are tagging their posts at Technorati, so make sure that you also do this. Other sites that you should ping on are Flickr and del.icio.us.. The next step should be tagging your posts on Digg and StumbleUpon. The key to tagging on these sites is to do it once in a while, tagging only the posts that are really good. If you ping and tag your less than best work, then the traffic from these sites will up and leave, never coming back for seconds. You should aim towards tagging and pinging your pillar articles with these sites in order to get your target audience.

So tips round off the “top ten tips for new bloggers”. If you have any better ones, please comment.
